IC 342  Hidden Galaxy. Taken at home on 01/04/11 and 01/07/11.  RCX400 scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 285 minutes. (LRGB=200:25:30:30). The galaxy is located close to the equatorial plane of the Milky Way.  As a consequence it heavily is obscured by dust in the Milky Way.  In fact it is in a galaxy group that wasn't discovered until 1968 because of this dust! IC 405  Flaming Star Nebula. Taken at home on 12/18/11, 12/20/11, 12/22/11, and 12/23/11.  RCX400 scope, ST-10XME camera. 60 seconds/frame, total time 10 hours, 25 minutes. (LRGB=384:81:79:81). The nebula is lit by the runaway star AE Aurigae, which was flung out of Orion 2.5 million years ago due to a collision. IC 1396  Elephant's Trunk Nebula. Taken at home on 08/08/08.  Orion ED80 scope, ST-10XME camera. 60 seconds/frame, total time 78 minutes (LRGB=39:13:13:13). The picture covers most of IC 1396, of which the Elephant's Trunk Nebula is but a small part. IC 5146  Cocoon Nebula Taken at home on 08/05/10 and 08/12/10.  RCX400 scope, ST-10XME camera. 150 seconds/frame, total time 370 minutes (LRGB=190:60:60:60). The picture shows emission, reflection and dark nebulae.
NGC 185  Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy in Cassiopeia. Taken at home on 08/27/13, 08/28/13, 09/03/13, 09/06/13. PlaneWave CDK 12.5" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 14h 30m (LRGB = 435:150:140:145 minutes). NGC 488  Spiral galaxy in Pisces. Taken at home on 10/04/15 - 10/09/15. Planewave CDK 12.5", SBIG ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/image, total time 12h 51 m (LRGB = 385:130:115:130 minutes). NGC 772  Spiral galaxy in Aries Taken at home on 11/11/10 and again on 10/28/11 and 10/29/11.  RCX400 scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 610 minutes (LRGB=325:95:95:95). The galaxy has been seriously disturbed by the companion elliptical galaxy NGC 770, which can be seen in this picture below and to the right (at 5:00).  The galaxy had two supernovae within three weeks of each other in 2003. NGC 1333  Reflection nebula in Perseus. Taken at home on 01/12/08 and 01/15/08.  Meade RCX400 10" scope, ST-10XME camera.  120 seconds/frame, total time 196 minutes (LRGB = 106:30:30:30).
NGC 1579  The Northern Trifid Nebula. Taken at home on 02/09/13, 02/10/13, and 02/12/13.  PlaneWave CDK 12.5"" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 9 hours (LRGB = 255:80:80:125 minutes). NGC 1857  Open cluster in Auriga. Taken at home on 02/14/13.  PlaneWave CDK 12.5" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 1 hour 5 minutes (LRGB = 30:10:10:15 minutes). NGC 2024  Flame Nebula in Orion. Taken at home on 01/27/12, 01/28/12, 02/01/12, and 02/16/12. Orion ED80 scope, ST-10 XME camera. 60-300 seconds/frame, total time 4h 18m (HaRGB=120:46:46:46). NGC 2170  Nebulae in Monoceros Taken at home on 01/26/11 through 02/02/11.  RCX400 scope, ST-10XME camera. 150 seconds/frame, total time 267 minutes (LRGB=202:20:25:20). This part of the sky shows reflection, emission and dark nebulae.
NGC 2264  Christmas Tree Cluster and Cone Nebula. Taken at home on 02/10/08 and 02/11/08.  Orion ED80, ST-10XME camera. 120 secones/frame, total time 161 minutes (HaRGB=110:14:19:18). NGC 2359  Thor's Helmet, aka the Duck Nebula. Taken at home on 01/18/09, 01/28/09 and 01/30/09. Meade RCX400 10" scope, ST-10 XME camera. 120-300 seconds/frame, total time 395 minutes (HaRGB=185:70:70:70). NGC 2419  The Intergalactic Wander, a cluster that's really a very remote member of the Milky Way galaxy. Taken at home on 12/30/08. Meade  RCX400 10" scope, ST-10XME camera.  60 seconds/frame, total time 76 minutes (LRGB=37:14:13:12). NGC 3190  Compact group of galaxies in Leo. Taken at home on 03/30/08.  Meade RCX400 10" scope, ST-10XME camera. Guided using AO internal guider. 300 seconds/frame for L, 120 seconds/frame for RGB, total time 137 minutes (LRGB=85:16:20:16).
NGC 3372  Eta Carinae Nebula. Taken from home using GRAS system in Australia on 03/09/08.  RCOS 12.5" scope, SBIG STL-11000M camera. 300 seconds/frame for L, 60 seconds/frame for RGB, total time 28 minutes (LRGB=25:1:1:1).  I also took a planning picture on 09/24/07 with a single 60 second L frame. Despite the short time, the picture was remarkably good. NGC 3628  Spiral Galaxy, part of the Leo Triplet. Taken at home on 05/08/07 and 05/13/07.  Meade RCX400 10" scope, DSI-Pro II camera, f/3.3 focal reducer. 30 seconds/frame, total time 197 minutes. LRGB=178:75:62:80. NGC 3718  Warped Spiral Galaxy and companion in Ursa Major. Taken at home on 05/31/13, 06/02/13, and 06/05/13. PlaneWave CDK 12.5" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 6h 10m (LRGB = 180:65:65:60 minutes). NGC 4013  Barred spiral galaxy in Ursa Major. Taken on 04/07/14 - 05/30/14. NGC 4173  Compact Galaxy Group Hickson 61, AKA "The Box". Taken at home on 05/10/12, 05/11/12, 05/16/12, 05/20/12, 06/09/12, and 06/10/12. PlaneWave CDK 12.5, Paramount MX mount, ST-10-XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time = 8h 25m (LRGB=360:50:50:45). NGC 4214  Star forming galaxy in Canes Venatici. Taken at home on 03/24/09 and 03/26/09.  Meade RCX400 10" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 325 minutes (LRGB=205:40:40:40). NGC 4217  Edge-on spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici. Taken at home on 06/14/07 and 06/18/08. Meade RCX400 10" scope, DSI-Pro II camera. Focal reducer used for RGBs, bare camera for Ls. 30 seconds/frame, total time 153 minutes. (LRGB=42:30:31:50). NGC 4236  Barred Spiral Galaxy in Draco. Taken on 01/23/14 - 02/22/14. Planewave CDK 12.5", SBIG ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/image, total time 14h 15m (LRGB = 430:130:135:160 minutes).
NGC 4244  Edge-on spiral in Canes Venatici. Taken on 06/07/15 - 06/23/15. Planewave CDK 12.5", SBIG ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/image, total time 7h 15m (LRGB = 250:70:55:60 minutes). NGC 4302 + 4298  Galaxy pair in Coma Berenices. Taken at home on 04/03/11 through 05/04/11. RCX400 scope, ST-10 XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 415 minutes. (LRGB=235:60:60:60). NGC 4302 is the vertically oriented galaxy in the picture, and NGC 4298 is the galaxy that is seen face-on.  These are both spiral galaxies. BGC 4438 and 4435  The Eyes, a pair of galaxies in Virgo. Taken at home on 04/09/13, 04/11/13, 04/12/13, 04/13/13, 05/10/13, 05/11/13, 05/12/13, 05/13/13. PlaneWave CDK 12.5" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 17h 15m (LRGB = 530:170:170:165 minutes). NGC 4449  Galaxy in Canes Venatici, with tidal stream. Taken at home on 02/28/13, 03/01/13, 03/08/13, 03/09/13, 03/10/13, 03/11/13, 03/12/13, 03/13/13, and 03/15/13.  PlaneWave CDK 12.5" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 23 hours 10 minutes (LRGB = 1060:10:120:120 minutes).
NGC 4449  Galaxy in Canes Venatici, with tidal stream. Taken at home on 02/28/13, 03/01/13, 03/08/13, 03/09/13, 03/10/13, 03/11/13, 03/12/13, 03/13/13, and 03/15/13.  PlaneWave CDK 12.5" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 23 hours 10 minutes (LRGB = 1060:10:120:120 minutes).  Black and white image shows the tidal stream better.  It is actually another galaxy merging with NGC 4449. NGC 4490  Coccoon Galaxy in Canes Venatici. Taken at home on 06/11/07 and 06/13/07. Meade RCX400 10" scope, DSI-Pro II camera, f/3.3 focal reducer. 30 seconds/frame, total time 231 minutes (LRGB=120:30:31:50). NGC 4565  Needle Galaxy Taken at home on 06/10/10 and 06/12/10. RCX400 scope, ST-10XME camera,  300 seconds/frame, total time 255 minutes (LRGB=195:20:20:20).   It is one of the largest of the edge-on galaxies.  Its position in space places it directly over the plane of our Milky Way, so that it could serve as our galaxy's pole "star". NGC 4631  NGC 4631, the Whale Galaxy in Canes Venatici. Taken at home on 05/02/10 and 05/06/10. Meade RCX400 10" scope, ST-10 XME camera. 300-1200 seconds/frame, total time 300 minutes (LRGBHa=120:20:20:20:120).
NGC4656.2016.06.30  The Hockey Stick Galaxy in Canes Venatci. Taken on 06/05/16 - 06/30-16. Planewave CDK 12.5", SBIG ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/image, total time 3h 15m (LRGB = 105:30;25:35 minutes). NGC 4874  Cluster of galaxies in Coma Berenices. Taken at home on 05/16/09, 05/17/09, 06/18/09. Meade RCX400 10", ST-10 XME. 120 seconds/frame, total time = 270 minutes (LRGB=198:26:24:22). NGC 5216 + 5218  Hickson's System. Taken at home on 07/01/11 through 07/06/11. Meade RCX400 10", ST-10 XME. 300 seconds/frame, total time = 425 minutes (LRGB=305:40:40:40). The upper and lower galaxies are NGC 5216 and NGC 5218 respectively.  They have undergone a collision, which has left a "counter tide" extending from the bottom of NGC 5218. NGC 5395  NGC 5394 and 5395, a pair of interacting galaxies in Canes Venatici. Taken at home on 07/16/09. Meade RCX400 10" scope, ST-10 XME camera. 120 seconds/frame, total time 120 minutes (LRGB=60:20:20:20).
NGC 5907  Spiral Galaxy in Draco. Taken at home on 06/27/13, 06/28/13, 06/30/13. PlaneWave CDK 12.5" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 6h 30m (LRGB = 195:65:65:65 minutes). NGC 5982  Draco Trio. Taken at home on 06/16/10. Meade RCX400 10" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame for RGB. Total time 240 minutes (LRGB=120:40:40:40). NGC 6888  Crescent Nebula. Taken at home between 07/07/06 and 07/24/06.  Meade RCX400 10" scope, DSI-Pro camera. A 2x2 mosaic.  30 to 60 seconds/frame, total time 10.3 hours. A Hydrogen-Alpha filter was used for the red component of the image, an Ultra High Contrast filter was used for the green component, and a blue filter + ALP filter gave the blue component. NGC 6946  NGC 6946 with supernova SN 2400et. Taken at home on 04/04/05. Meade LX200 GPS 8" scope, alt/az mount, DSI-C camera. 10 seconds/frame, total time 54 minutes. The inset shows another picture taken with the DSI camera on 12/16/04. The supernova had dimmed considerably by 04/04/05.
NGC 6946  Fireworks Galaxy. Taken at home on 09/01/10 through 09/04/10. Meade RCX400 10" scope, ST-10XMEI camera. 300 seconds/frame for LRGB, 1200 seconds/frame for Ha, total time 635 minutes (LRGBHa=305:30:30:30:240). NGC 7023  Iris Nebula. Taken at home on 08/09/07. Meade RCX400 10" scope, DSI-Pro II camera. 10 seconds/frame, total time 186 minutes (LRGB=120:16:20:30). NGC 7129  Reflection Nebula in Cepheus. Taken at home on 09/20/09, 09/23/09, 09/24/09, 09/25/09. Meade RCX400 10" scope, ST-10 XME. 300 seconds/frame, total time 850 minutes (LRGB=635:75:70:70). NGC 7331  Spiral galaxy in Pegasus, the Milky Way's Twin. Taken at home on 09/14/12, 09/18/12, 09/20/12, 09/22/12, and 09/23/12 .  PlaneWave CDK 12.5" scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 20 hours 55 minutes (LRGB = 850:140:135:130 minutes).
NGC 7380  The Wizard Nebula, an open cluster and nebula in Cepheus. Taken at home on 09/01/08, 09/03/08, and 09/05/08. Orion ED80 scope, ST-10XME camera. 120 seconds/frame, total time 540 minutes (HaRGB=300:80:80:80).   The wizard's head is a dark pointy area towards the top left of the nebula. There is a very small bright bluish "bubble" near the wizard's mouth. In the center is a Wolf-Rayet star that is responsible for creating the bubble. NGC 7479  Barred Spiral Galaxy in Pegasus. Taken at home on 08/01/11 through 09/01/11. RCX400 scope, ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/frame, total time 8 hours 45 minutes (LRGB=405:40:40:40).  This galaxy had two supernovae in 1990 and 2009.  Some of the fainter objects in the picture are actually remote galaxies. NGC 7538  Molecular Cloud Complex in Cepheus. Taken on 07/29/16 - 09/06/16. Planewave CDK 12.5", SBIG ST-10XME camera. 300 seconds/image, total time 20h 10m (LRGB = 800:135;130:145 minutes). NGC 7635  Bubble Nebula in Cassiopeia. Taken at home on 08/06/12, 08/07/12, 08/08/12, 08/09/12, 08/11/12, 08/13/12, 08/17/12, 08/18/12, and 08/19/12. PlaneWave CDK 12.5, Paramount MX mount, ST-10 XME camera. 120-300 seconds/frame, total time 18h 8m (LRGB=788:100:100:100).
