Planetary Nebula Observations
by Hilary Jones
Except as noted, these are the photographs of Planetary Nebulae that I submitted to the Astronomical League's Planetary Nebula Program. I used a PlaneWave CDK 12.5" telescope on a Paramount MX mount, which is located in my suburban observatory in Northern California at latitude 37° 49' N, longitude 121° 59' W, and altitude 109m. I took all the pictures using an SBIG ST-10XME camera and Astrodon filters. Except as noted, six images were acquired for each filter using an exposure time of 300 seconds per image. I used CCD Commander to drive the process, and TheSkyX to control the scope and camera. I did the post processing using MaxIm DL, CCDStack2, and Photoshop CS4. I photographed all targets using two filters. The first filter was an L filter, which appears in the image that usually shows on this web page. But if you hover your mouse over that image, a different image will be displayed to show how the object looks with the second filter. This was either an OIII or an Ha filter. The contrast of the two pictures has been adjusted to make them roughly the same everywhere except near the planetary nebula itself. In some cases you may need blink the two images to identify where the nebula actually is. You will see that many of my pictures were taken with an Ha filter, where you might have expected the OIII filter to be the better choice. However in my experience many targets were barely visible with the OIII filter, while they showed well with the Ha filter. I assume that this was because my Ha filter was better able to suppress sky glow. In the following tables, the seeing is given by the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of a typical star's profile, expressed in arc seconds; and the sky darkness is expressed in magnitudes per square arc second (mag/sq"). Both values were measured directly from the image, so they differ from what would have been measured at the zenith. I did not use a Sky Quality Meter to obtain the sky darkness, although that data is available upon request. To see a list of the Planetary Nebulae that were photographed for this project, click here. I tried to stick to the official target list for the Astronomical League's Planetary Nebula project. But my observatory doesn't allow me to photograph objects at very low declination, so I had to supplement the list with objects from Abell's Planetary Nebula catalog. |

Notes: Target does not show up in OIII and L pictures, but is quite clear in Ha picture,
where it takes the shape of a broken ring. The thickest parts of the ring are in the
NW and SE edges. A strong star, possibly the central star, is off-center to the W.

Notes: A featrureless disk very near a bright star. Central star not visible. Nebula is visible

Notes: Barely visible disk. I spent a lot of time comparing my picture to photos on the web
before I could positively say that the shape in my picture was correct. This picture
really should be redone with more exposures; and it would probably show up better
            using an Ha filter.

Notes: Very large irregular structure, rather like looking into the end of a cylinder. Oriented
NW/SE,with heaviest end in the SE, and the dimmer "open" end of the cylinder in the
NW. Many streams of material cross the area. Many stars, so it's not obvous which
one was the original cental star, if any. Can be seen faintly in L picture, but Ha
            is much better.

Notes: Diffuse ill-defined shape, somewhat rectangular with a heavier region in the N. There
is also a fainter region further to the N and separated from the main nebula, and
an even fainter region to the S. These could be remnants of a ring. One central star
            stands out. (Not submitted.)

Notes: A flat but slightly mottled disk shape, with two arms suggestive of a spiral galaxy.
It has been said that this target is not actually a planetary nebula because it has
almost no OIII emission. Instead it might just be a cloud of H gases. This object
is embedded in a nebulous cloud of material known as SH 2-115, details of which can
            be seen in my photograph.

Notes: This target is quite large, occupying almost the entire frame; and it is quite dim,
almost nvisible. It is basically a flat disk with slightly heavier areas to the S,
W and E. The image is quite noisy, and it would take a much longer exposure time to
see any structure. I have checked this image against others to confirm that I am seeing
real structure and not just artifacts.

Notes: The only way to know that this isn't a common star is to compare the L and Ha images.
In addition, the FWHM for the nebula is much bigger than for its neighboring stars,
suggesting that I might have been able to pick out a little structure if the seeing
            had been better.

Notes: Almost stellar. The nebula's FWHM is jsut slightly larger than surrounding stars.
If the seeing had been better, this effect might have been more noticeable, and I
might have seen some structure. No central star of course.

Notes: Extremely faint ring shape. This target required a great deal of post-processing to
reveal even the slightest hint of a nebula. I have compared it to other pictures on
the web, most notably at http://astro.neutral.org/imagehtml/20120225-egb6.html; so
there is no doubt that the photograph is correct. The ring is heaviest in the SW,
but does continue full circle if one looks closely. Many stars in the area, so it's
not obvious which if any is the central star. This image was done with only a half-hour
total exposure time. It needs to be redone with several hours to make a truly convincing
            case.

Notes: Large ring-like shape with pinched middle, giving the appearance of an hour glass
or figure eight. Very weakly visible in L picture. Slightly better in OIII, but best
in Ha. A central star is visible in the L picture.

Notes: Large fairly uniform disk, but with heavier parts on the NNW and SSE. These areas
seem somewhat indented from the rest of the expansion front, so perhaps the material
was slowed down. There is also one heavier area to the S and outside the main disk.
This could be an artifact or the debris from an earlier expansion.

Notes: A large extremely faint uniform disk, not quite centered perfectly on the central
star. This target was not visible using an Ha filter. Unlike most pictures, I took
twelve 5-minute exposures to capture the OIII image.

Notes: Stellar. The only way to know that this isn't a common star is to compare the L and
Ha images. The nebula might have a slightly larger diameter than surrounding stars,
but we would need much better seeing to be sure.

Notes: Appears roiughly circular in the L picture, with strong features to the NE and SW.
The nebula has been described as "double lobed", and the L picture does barely show
the two outer lobes. But these show up more more prominently in the OIII picture as
two arcs to the NW and SE. The central star is especially prominent in the L picture.

Notes: Large disk without a strong rim. Interior is uneven with a weaker "figure eight" structure
tilted bout 45 degrees to the W. Interior is surrounded by a weaker disk that shows
best in the OIII picture. Central star is prominent, and two other stars are in the
            same area.

Notes: Small very strong central region, somewhat larger than a star, and not quite round.
In addition there are two bubbles pushing out of the top and bottom. The strong area
could just be a very bright central star, or a nebula that obscures the central star.

Notes: Large irregular ring that has been broken up into many pieces. Gives the impression
of a flower. To the W is a particularly heavy area that lies closer to the center
than the rest of the ring. This area can be seen in the L picture too. Farther out
and slightly to the S is a "swoosh" shape, perhaps a case where the expanding debris
encountered a pillar of creation. There is an extremely bright area in the center,
with an irregular shape, suggesting that the planetary nebula has undergone more than
            one explosive event.

Notes: The only way to know that this isn't a common star is to compare the L and Ha images.
            Also the FWHM is 6.6", which is slightly larger than the surrounding stars (4.5");
            but no structure is apparent.

Notes: Stellar. The only way to know that this isn't a common star is to compare the L and
Ha images. The size of the nebula is about 2". By contrast, the FWHM of this object
and the surrounding stars is about 4.3"; so there's no way to resolve any detail.

Notes: Small irregular disk, shows some structure in the interior. But seeing was so bad
that most of the structure is smeared out. It may be somewhat heavier in the S, with
a fainter rim beyond that. A central star is visible.

            The seeing was so bad that the FWHM of this object was comparable to surrounding stars;
so it was impossible to know whether there was any structure worth seeing.

Notes: Very faint medium sized disk, and very strong smallish disk, about one third the size
of the larger disk Neither disk shows structure. I suppose the fainter disk could
be the result of an older explosion and the strronger disk more recent.

Notes: A small disk with a cross in the middle that separates the nebula into four equal-sized
parts. Two of the parts in the NW and SE have stronger areas. These probably aren't
foreground stars because their brightness changes with the filter.

Notes: Dumbell Nebula shows up well in both L and Ha picture. Because of clouds, the L picture
was only 5 minutes, and the Ha picture totalled only 15 minutes. Nonetheless structure
is visible everywhere in this large target, including some wispy features outside
the main body. A central star can be seen in the L picture. There is a lot of mottling
in the Ha picture, but not so evident in the L picture.

Notes: Almost stellar. The object is said to span 4.7 arcsec, but it measures 6.8 arcsec
due to very poor seeing. Neighboring stars measure just slightly less (6.4 arcsec),
so this might be taken as evidence that the object is not stellar. The target's brightness
also differs between the L and Ha images, which can be taken as evidence that this
            is not a common star.

Notes: The only way to know that this isn't a common star is to compare the L and Ha images.
Also the nebula's FWHM might be a little bigger than for neighboring stars, suggesting
that I might have been able to see a little structure if seeing had been better. Note
that there is also one feature in the SE corner of the image that brightens slightly
in the Ha image; so this might be another Planetary Nebula. The L and Ha exposures
totalled just five seconds each because the session had to be terminated when the
            sun was rising.

Notes: Mottled disk, with a weak edge on the N suggesting that material might have broken
out there. Mottling has an hour-glass shape. Poor seeing has problably smeared out
some of the mottling. Disk is barely visible in L picture but stands out well in Ha
            picture. No central star visible.

Notes: The only way to know that this isn't a common star is to compare the L and Ha images.
The target's FWHM is 3.1", versus neighboring stars of 2.7"; so evidentally it is
almost resolvable. But the pictures do not show any shape or other detail that would
            distinguish it from a star.

Notes: This is a tiny planetary nebula embedded in the M15 cluster. It is located at about
11 o'clock, and about half way out from the center of the nebula. Its size is only
1 arcsecond, so there is no way to resolve any structure. The only way to know that
this isn't a common star is to compare the L and Ha images, and even then the target
barely jumps out from the cluster's stars.

Notes: Butterfly shaped, with long thin "body" oriented NW/SE, and circular "wings" on the
sides. The wings extend out a little farther than the length of the body; but there
are traces of nebulosity even farther out, particularly to the SW. There is one bright
star at the SE tail of the body, but it seems more likely to be a foreground star
than a central star. No other star would qualify as a central star. The wings are
quite noisy. It would take a much longer exposure to show these areas off well.

Notes: A large crescent Moon shape, with many striations. The loop is heaviest in the SE

Notes: Stellar. The only way to know that this isn't a common star is to compare the L and
Ha images. Also the target is slightly larger (6.4") than the surrounding stars ("4.7").
It is reported to have a size of 14"; but this doesn't seem to be supported by my
image. However seeing was poor, so perhaps it would have shown up better on a better
night or with a different filter.

Notes: The FWHM of the target is very close to that for the stars. Perhaps with better seeing
one woiuld have seen a difference; but with the given data the only way to know that
this isn't a common star is to compare the object's brightness in the L and Ha images.
